Not long after ‘First’ was released we followed them to their gigs confirming that the First Aid Kit phenomenon was definitely an exception.
They played time and again, at home and away from it, gradually improving and becoming ever more confident. They were showered with praise and, oh, the repertoire was soon overstretched. Isn’t it the best kind of news? First Aid Kid now needed to follow on from ‘First’.
‘Second’? No, ‘Plaits’. First Aid Kit’s new material, just like their second album title is not a mere continuation of ‘First’, neither does it correspond to a foreseeable progression we could have automatically guessed. Agnès and Carles have caught us by surprise yet again.‘Plaits’ brings it back to us in an exceptional state of grace. Much mroe direct and much more concise, more organic (the duality between the electronic tones and the rest seems the result of an exact calculation) and most importantly better asccompanied than ever: several session musicians (such as Eric Fuentes fromUnfinished Sympathy) flesh and blood percussion and toy drum kits, pianos and even a string trio.
Can you imagine how First Aid Kit sound now? Their eleven new hits lead you again throught an extraodinary range of emotion, they are more well-rounded than ever and include some songs which begin in silence soar to the stratosphere wrapped in distorted electronica (‘Valse’, ‘Ígnition’), intimate secets whispered into your ear (‘Mr. Tea Pot’,’Small’) and also sweet sunshiny pop hits (‘Samurai Tourist’, ‘Truth can Hurt’). Besides, (and as already happened with Greenish from ‘First’), towards the end of the disc we came across a decidedly up-tempo song which seems to suggest that First Aid Kit have a hidden side which comes very close to dancefloor music. ( Screw me up and throw away) . All these songs and more are a true gift to those who enjoyed First and most of all for those who have just discovered First Aid Kit. Now both partied need to rediscover them on stage (with Oriol Mayol tinkling the ivories and the new recruit Albert Aran at the drum kit) to thrill us if possible alittle bit more. Arnau Horta.
